After the death of Sultan al-Ẓāhir Barqūq in 801 civil war breaks out. Ibn Ghurāb comes out as vizier to the victorious Faraj b. Barqūq.
الاستادارية عوضا عن الامير يلبغا السالمي رجب 803
His demeanor turns increasingly like that of the military elite. He holds court, has a music troop (ṭabl) at his door, amasses horses and eunuchs. Still he dons the attire of the kuttāb.
His influence and power increase. He organises the transfer of power from al-Nāṣir Faraj b. Barqūq to al-Manṣūr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Barqūq. After 70 days, he is responsible for re-seating the former. Now he dresses like a military, is adressed as amir, and wears a sword.
Yet soon he falls terminally ill and dies at less than 30 years of age.
The biographers on the one hand laud his philantropic actions, especially during the plague outbreaks. On the other hand does Maqrīzī blame him for the crippling inflation and therefore the economic downturn of the country.
He founded a khānqāh und a madrasa facing the Bashtāk-mosque outside Cairo at the khalīj.
